CARPET GLOSSARY

Nylon

Nylon is the most widely used carpet fiber, primarily due to it’s strength. It is a very durable fiber and holds up well to foot traffic and stains, making it a good choice for high-traffic areas. The strengths of nylon include good resiliency, good yarn memory to hold twist, good carpet cleaning efficacy, good stain resistance with stain treatment applied, good soil hiding ability, and good abrasion resistance. It is the strongest fiber, making it an excellent choice for the heavy traffic of an active household or commercial facility. It’s also the most durable of the synthetics. It is soil and mildew resistant and resilient, but is prone to static. Most nylon is treated with an anti-static treatment to reduce static.

Polyester

Polyester generally has some of the most beautiful colorations available. It is extremely fade resistant and provides excellent resistance to stains but does have poor resilient properties and thus is susceptible to crushing. Polyester fabrics are generally sold in heavy face weights with high-density construction. Avoid high pile heights with low-density construction. These products tend to flatten and “ugly” out. Also look for high twist levels rather than “blown” yarns. Loose twists (blown yarn) tend to untwist and the yarn tips tend to fuse together creating a matted appearance. Most consumers like to dig their fingers into the carpet pile and if it provides a luxurious feel (hand) they believe this is excellent quality.

Wool

This traditional favorite offers a deep, rich look and feel. Wool remains the premier fiber in carpet construction, but its price is on the high end for most consumers. It has excellent resilience and durability, but can be quite expensive, often twice as much per yard as nylon. Other synthetic fibers have done an excellent job of duplicating the characteristics of wool, although none have replicated all of the attributes. Some benefits of wool include ease of cleaning, beautiful colors, and overall resiliency. Although easy to clean, special care should be taken to ensure moisture does not remain as the fiber is susceptible to shrinking and mold and mildew growth. Before selecting a wool carpet for your home or office, it is important to understand that the fiber tends to wear down or wear away, sometimes even causing bald spots in heavy traffic areas

Anso Nylon

Anso Nylon is available exclusively through Shaw Industries and is their premier carpet fiber. This nylon is sustainable, resilient, soil-resistant and tough. Anso Nylon products are also backed with SoftBac Platinum, a proprietary backing system that offers a no-wrinkle warranty.

AnsoCaress

Technology has taken carpet fiber one step further with Anso Caress nylon. Not only is it tough, it’s unbelievably soft. Silk-like softness has been married to the performance of Anso Caress nylon to produce a soft, elegant, and naturally touch product.

Softbac

The flexible and wrinkle free carpet backing system. Not only is this backing system incredibly soft, it also protects against wrinkles and seam peaking. It also makes for stronger, less visible seams as well as higher sound absorption and increased insulation capacity. Softbac is especially beneficial for area rugs so as not to damage the floor beneath the rug with the standard rough carpet backing.

Stainmaster Carpet

Stainmaster Trusoft

The softest Stainmaster carpet available. Stainmaster TruSoft Carpet is a great option for residential areas because it is made to resist most floor and beverage stains. It has LotusFX Fiber Shield which dramatically increases the cleanability of the carpet, meaning stains and soil can be easily cleaned. TruSoft Carpet is extremely durable, because it resists abrasive wear and is made to retain its original appearance.
